I live on the Mississippi River and I know one thing for sure: it’s always windy along the river.
Always.
It was one of the things we noticed after living here a short time. In fact, there’s so much wind that it’s usually 10 degrees cooler in the backyard than in our front yard. That’s great on 90 degree days but a bummer on 70 degree days!
Sometimes, you can hardly talk or sit back there because of the strong winds. Then, if you walk to the front yard, the wind is a gentle whisper.
The other morning as I was sitting with my coffee and Bible, I was struck by the stillness of the backyard.
There was no wind.
The leaves were not dancing or rustling.
The chimes were not singing.
The water was not choppy.
It was still.
There was a beauty in that stillness that was different than the beauty that comes from the wind. I captured this pic and spent time praising God for the beauty of the quietness outside.
As I was reflecting, it struck me that life is a lot like the wind along the river… always moving and pushing. It’s beautiful and fun, but can also be crazy and chaotic. It’s inevitable!
However, there is a certain beauty that happens in life when we create moments of stillness in our hearts and minds.
Psalm 46:10 says:
“Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world."
Isaiah 30:15 agrees:
“This is what the Sovereign LORD, the Holy One of Israel, says: "Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved. In quietness and confidence is your strength.”
God speaks to us and moves on our behalf in the stillness and quietness we bring before him. It’s imperative that we make time for him amidst the winds of everyday life.
Even just five to ten minutes each morning is enough to bring a special beauty to our relationship with him. Can I invite you to dock your phone, turn off the noise, and spend time in the stillness?
Sweet Friend, the stillness contains pure gold!
God will show up and meet you in a way that he can’t amidst the “winds” of life.
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the beauty of your creation. You are a master artist! What a world you have created, Thank you for loving us enough to invite us into a special quietness with you. As we seek you, will you help us find you?
Amen
We are better together!
Mint.
Always.
