Hang on Tight!
After finally getting some snow this winter, yesterday we decided to get outside and enjoy it! My husband tied a sled with a rope to our side-by-side and we pulled the kids around all afternoon. From whipping them around the yard to long rides down the nearby dirt roads, giggles were loud, cheeks were rosy and hearts were full!
Every once in a while, I would look back and notice one of the kids getting a little too comfortable, thinking they had mastered this sledding situation. Out of boredom maybe, or possibly daringness, they would start dragging their hands along the side in the snow or kicking their feet over the edge of the sled. Simply put, they had just stopped paying attention. And sure enough… shortly after their lack of readiness, they would find themselves torpedoed into the nearest snowbank.
As the loving adult responsible for these forgetful little daredevils, I found myself saying, “Pay attention! You need to hold on tight!”...
Wait. Where have I heard that before?
“Stay alert! Watch out for your enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are.”
1 Peter 5:8-9
In the same way, God loves us and doesn’t want to see us off in a snowbank either. This is why he created scripture for us to study and gave us the Holy Spirit to help guide us. We must not get so comfortable that we stop paying attention to the things God has warned us about!
Is there an area in your life you feel you have gotten too comfortable with?
A situation you think you have mastered and either out of boredom or daringness, you have started dragging your hands or kicking up your feet?
Simply put, where in your life have you stopped paying attention to what God has warned you of?
Our afternoon ended with happy kids by a warm fire enjoying cookies and hot chocolate. It was a beautiful day that I hope will stick in their hearts forever when they think back about their childhood. But I also hope it will stick in my heart forever and remind me of how blind I can be sometimes. I want nothing more than to see clearly where the Lord is guiding me and what he is attempting to protect me from if I simply pay attention to his word and hold on tight!
Do yourself a favor and get outside to enjoy the snow this weekend!
